Small Business Week Featured Business: Benge Equipment And Recreation

It’s National Small Business Week and we’re celebrating by introducing you to some of the other small businesses that we support. We plan on releasing a few of these this week, and we’ll probably keep introducing businesses every now and then throughout the year. Today, I want to introduce Benge Equipment And Recreation.

I have known John for more years than I can count. He was the best man at my wedding, is the godfather to my children, and has been a part of most of the major milestones in my life. I consider him a brother. He has an intense passion and understanding for the outdoors, as well as for a person’s need to reconnect with nature. It’s because of that understanding that he founded Benge Equipment And Recreation (which I will henceforth refer to as BEAR). We asked him some questions about what he does so our readers would know more. Here’s what he has to say about his company.

What do you offer your customers?

We offer a wide range of skills courses for hikers, campers, and anyone looking to improve their outdoors experience. Some of our skills classes are interchangeable. Fire starting, for instance, is a skill that can both make life at the camp ground easier, as well as possibly save your life if you ever needed a fire in a survival situation. We also host guided hikes. Our guided hikes range in difficulty from the beginner to intermediate hiking. We have single day, as well as multi-day hikes available with prior booking. The one thing we offer that I truly encourage is our Fit Hike. We have a monthly free fitness hike for anyone who’s looking to lose some extra pounds and get in better shape than they currently are. I offer this free because I would rather see someone better themselves than be discouraged by cost. We also are hoping to offer a selection of quality equipment in the near future for all levels of experienced hikers, campers and outdoors enthusiasts.

How has your business benefited you or your community?

This business has benefited me personally because I get to work with something I love. I love everything about hiking and being outside. It’s been said that if you do something you love, you’ll never work again. That’s where I’m at in this business, I love it. I feel that what I do also has meaning in my community as well. I believe that a large number of us have a disconnect with nature. There are more than a few studies that show that time spent in nature, outside of the concrete jungle and suburban streets, lowers stress and helps “re-ground” people. I know that for me, I’m not at my best unless I’ve had at least a hike at the end of the week. I feel that what I do can help bring people back to nature and help refocus their minds to be a more productive person through out the week.

How can our readers contact you?

We’re on Facebook at, or you can visit our website at

Where can people join one of your Fit Hikes?

Most Fit Hikes are held on Saturdays at the North Etiwanda Preserve in Rancho Cucamonga, but they can vary. I recommend you check our schedule on the website if you want to know when and where we’ll be for the next hike. Also, you can get $10 off any skills course if you use coupon code “visceral” when you sign up for a class.

We definitely encourage you to check out one of those Fit Hikes, and take advantage of a discounted skills course, too. I head out with them often and enjoy the time in nature. Let us know what you think of it in the comments below, and make sure you share this with your friends! Look out for more featured businesses coming soon!
