“I’ll do it later…” is something I say all to often. Like me, many of us have grown up procrastinating just about everything we were told to do, especially things like cleaning our room and homework. Unfortunately, I still find myself putting off what needs to get done way too often, even though I am constantly on my kids to get things done “right now.” As my husband and I read a lot, we have found that successful people tend to have things in common. One of the reoccurring lessons that successful people link to their success, no matter what their profession, is that they all have a “Do it Now!” mentality. I have learned that successful people don’t make a habit of putting things off. If it needs to be done they do it, get it done, and move onto the next thing. Now, that doesn’t mean that they are always working and that in order to be successful we too must always work. Sometimes what needs to get done is not work—it’s vacationing, spending time with their kids, etc. It’s been called “pre-planned procrastination,” and it is essential to having a balanced life.
Don’t say you have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein.”
– H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
A former leader of mine in business and one of the most successful people that I have personally met, lives and teaches this lesson daily. His motto is “DO IT NOW!” I remember a story he told about when he gets up in the morning, he doesn’t hit the snooze button, he taught himself to just get out of bed by repeating to himself, “do it now,” and then following that with action. I have applied this lesson many times, especially when its time to go running and I am feeling especially lazy that day. When my head starts to find excuses not to run (I’m tired, I don’t feel good, bla bla bla), I ask myself, “Do you want to reach your goals?…Yes…then, do it now!” This has helped me to kick my own butt into gear and get it done.
We came across a great article that talks about if you want to be successful, you need to have purpose in your life, to get things done, and to get them done fast. The article, The Need For Speed by Preston Ely, gives a great talk on doing things in our life with purpose. It’s a great read and will even make you laugh. Please take the time, right now, and read it! You won’t be sorry you did. Happy reading! And always remember, if you gotta do it, do it now! Enjoy!
